This video will look at extending the screen resolution output for a Linux VM (Manjaro KDE Plasma), when using the VMSVGA Graphics Controller in Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager. This video will show you how to resolve the small window for the VM when using the VMSVGA Graphics Controller, and set a fullscreen display. Arch Wiki for xrandr - 🤍

This time I want to show you a trick to increase the video performances of your Linux virtual machines (and not just Linux) on Virtualbox. By default the "Settings window" does not allow you to increase the VRAM above 128 MB, while 3D is only possible with the VMSVGA graphics controller. I said "Settings window" on purpose, because it is possible to change the settings also from the main Virtualbox window, if not with all the parameters, at least with those that interest us most! Here my settings on Virtualbox: - Graphics Controller = VboxVGA (the one supported from Virtualbox 5.x and older); - Video Memory = 256 MB (the maximum possible for now, for all VMs clients); - Accelleration = 3D (normally the Settings windows doesn't allows you to use both this and alternative GC to VMSVGA). You can also use VboxSVGA instead, but VboxVGA is almost good for Linux. NOTE: to keep these changes permanent, do not open the Settings window by mail, in this case reset everything from the main window, as in this video. Have fun! ;) VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2. See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x and 4.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD. Simple setting change to get fullscreen virtual machines on Linux Mint 20.1 VBoxVGA or VBoxSVGA seem to work but the default VMSVGA doesn't. You get an 'invalid settings' message but this worked for me.
To install virtualbox run the following cmd: sudo pkg install virtualbox-ose virtualbox-ose-additions virtualbox-ose-kmod OR: use the software station MESSAGE AT END OF TERMINAL READOUT TERMINAL READOUT V-BOX Where Guest Additions are installed: 1. prefer VBoxSVGA 2. do not enable 3D acceleration (doing so will invisibly lose the preference for VBoxSVGA) you may ignore the yellow alert that encourages use of VMSVGA. Message from virtualbox-ose-kmod-6.1.34_1: The vboxdrv kernel module uses internal kernel APIs. To avoid crashes due to kernel incompatibility, this module will only load on FreeBSD 13.1 kernels. Message from virtualbox-ose-6.1.34: VirtualBox was installed. You need to load the vboxdrv kernel module via sudo nano /boot/loader.conf: vboxdrv_load="YES" You also have to add all users to your vboxusers group in order to use vbox. # pw groupmod vboxusers -m dennis Reboot the machine to load the needed kernel modules. Bridging Support: For bridged networking please add the following line to your sudo ee /etc/rc.conf: vboxnet_enable="YES" USB Support: For USB support your user needs to be in the operator group and needs read and write permissions to the USB device. # pw groupmod operator -m dennis Add the following into sudo nano /etc/devfs.rules (create if it doesn't exist): [system=10] add path 'usb/*' mode 0660 group operator To load these new rule add the following to sudo ee /etc/rc.conf: devfs_system_ruleset="system" Then restart devfs to load the new rules: # /etc/rc.d/devfs restart Message from virtualbox-ose-additions-6.1.34: VirtualBox Guest Additions are installed. To enable and start the required services: # sysrc vboxguest_enable="YES" # sysrc vboxservice_enable="YES" To start the services, restart the system. In some situations, a panic will occur when the kernel module loads. Having no more than one virtual CPU might mitigate the issue. For features such as window scaling and clipboard sharing, membership of the wheel group is required. # pw groupmod wheel -m dennis The settings dialogue for FreeBSD guests encourages use of the VMSVGA graphics controller. Whilst this might suit installations of FreeBSD without a desktop environment (a common use case), it is not appropriate where Guest Additions are installed. ###################################### And now virtualbox should work 'fabulously'. Download your fav .iso files and load them up & most of all have fun learning how all the different systems work. What software is/is not available. What software is/is not considered default. Most of all, learn if a system will meet your needs to carry on with what ever it is you use the PC for. Thanks again for watching!! Stay safe. Arch'N On

In this tutorial, we install LinuxFX, also known as WindowsFX, a lightweight Linux variant designed to largely replicate the appearance and functionality of Windows 10, progressing through configuration and customisation within its live installation environment. Following initial setup, we configure display options to match our monitor resolution, before undertaking a desktop tour and overview of preinstalled apps, noting the extensive library of additional software available via the integrated store. We further consider whether LinuxFX strays too close to the edge of acceptability, borrowing heavily from Microsoft Windows in both appearance and methods of operation, further examining weaknesses in presentation which currently prevent its elevation to something more than simple curiosity.
