What do counselling skills look like, and what goes on for the counsellor during the work. This video presents a brief demonstration of counselling practice with a client, 'Tara' (played by an actor), who has come to counselling with low mood and problems with studying. The practice is based on 'person-centred'/'Rogerian' principles but with a change-focused emphasis. In particular, the work aims to help the client REFLECT on their issues, RE-EVALUATE how they are doing things, and RE-DECIDE their choices and actionsso that the client can find more satisfying and fulfilling ways of being. As part of the reflection process, there is a particular emphasis on 'resonating with'and helping the client connect tofeelings and emotions. This is so that the focus of the work is on the issues that are of most importance to the client. The demonstration is interspersed with reflective comments from myself, as counsellor. I describe what I'm thinking, feeling, and experiencing as the counselling is going on; what I am trying to do; how I evaluate my own practice; and how my interventions and responses relate to counselling theory and practice. The video is aimed at students just starting out on counselling and counselling skills practice, as well as more experienced practitioners interested in seeing the 'nitty-gritty' of how other therapists work. It may also be of interest to counselling clients and other lay-people who are intrigued in understanding more of the aims of counselling and the counsellor's own inner process. More details of my work, including publications, research articles, and videos, can be found at mick-cooper.co.uk The video was put together by my daughter, Maya. Her website is here: 🤍 . Taste of a first counselling session (created specifically). This video is designed to show you the boundaries of the counselling that a counsellor would want to cover in a first session. In this case, the therapist is trying to cover those aspects of a contract in response to questions the client is raising, rather than introducing them in a more directive or robotic way. This is a more natural way of doing it, but where this is not possible they need to be covered anyway.

#Psychologists #Psychiatrists #Psychotherapists In today's video Dr. Becky explains the differences between Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists and Counsellors. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication, they usually cannot provide any type of talking therapy, however, this can vary dependant on the practitioner. Psychiatrists usually refer clients to other practitioners who can provide talking therapy. Psychiatrists can diagnose psychological disorders. * Psychiatrists should be accredited by: RCPsych: 🤍 Psychologists will have undertaken an undergraduate degree as well as a Doctorate, in order to be given the title "Dr." Psychologist training will usually take between 6-8 years in total. Psychologists are usually trained in at least two types of talking therapy/ psychotherapy approaches. Psychologists are able to diagnose psychological disorders. * Psychologists should be accredited by: HCPC: 🤍 Psychotherapists usually have not undertaken a doctorate level training, usually psychotherapists cannot diagnose psychological disorders, but Cognitive Behavioural Therapists (CBT) can sometimes diagnoses anxiety and depression only. Psychotherapists can provide high quality talking therapy without diagnosing. * Psychotherapists should be accredited by: (Cognitive Behavioural Therapists) BABCP: 🤍 UKCP: 🤍 or BACP: 🤍 Counsellors are usually trained in Person- Centred therapy, but they are usually not trained in or qualified in specific evidence based type therapies. They are also not trained in how to formulate or diagnose. There will be a lot of emphasis based on listening with a counsellor and building the therapeutic relationship. * Counsellors should be accredited by: UKCP: 🤍 or BACP: 🤍 Make sure when choosing your practitioner you research into their qualifications and years of experience to ensure you are receiving the most suitable and professional support, you can check on professional body websites, to make sure your chosen practitioner is accredited. In this video Dr. Becky Spelman provides her career advice for those interested in becoming a Psychologist and the difference and similarities between Clinical Psychology Doctorate and Counselling Psychology Doctorate. Both Clinical and Counselling Psychology Doctorates lead to HCPC registration in order to become a fully qualified Psychologist in the UK. The Clinical Psychology Doctorate is funded for UK and EU citizens and you receive a salary whilst training. The Counselling Psychology Doctorate is self funded only. Clinical Psychology also includes a Neuro Psychology module, whereas some Counselling Psychology courses may not. Both Doctorates are very similar and both courses are very competitive to get onto. In this video we demonstrate the counselling microskill of checking perceptions. When checking perceptions the counsellor checks in explicitly with the client about the goodness of fit of what the counsellor has just said or invites client input on change of direction or topic. The purposes of checking perceptions are to demonstrate respect and to foreground client perspectives, to communicate cultural humility, and to invite continued feedback from the client. Is there EVEN A DIFFERENCE between them?… YES! In today's video, I’m going to (hopefully) simply explain the difference between Psychologists, Psychotherapists and Counsellors. Throughout the course of my career, this has generated a LOT of confusion, not only for myself but for others. In reality, we often use these terms interchangeably as the titles usually just mean we are working with someone in a therapeutic capacity. THAT SAID, there are certainly differences between the three and it’s important to be aware of which practitioner you may want to become or see in a clinical setting. Today we are focusing on the definitions of these three practitioners, what it is they do and who they typically work with. If anything, I hope this video provides some clarification to my mom… as I am not a Psychiatrist and likely never will be! I hope that you all enjoy! Take care! Mike :) TIMESTAMPS Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video! I am always so grateful to hear your feedback, so if you like the video or have any questions, feel free to get in touch! Congruence in counselling PDF download. 🤍 Feltham and Dryden (1993, p. 36) define ‘congruence’ as ‘genuineness, honesty exhibited by the counsellor as an essential part of her person and her work; likewise, the genuineness of the client’.
