At least 78 people have died and many more are feared missing after a fishing boat carrying refugees and migrants capsized and sank off the southern coast of Greece – one of the worst such disasters this year. The Greek coastguard said in a statement on Wednesday the vessel sank in international waters, 47 nautical miles (87km) southwest of Pylos, off the Peloponnese coast. The spot is close to one of the deepest areas of the Mediterranean. The accident prompted an extensive rescue operation complicated by strong winds, the coastguard said, adding about 100 people had been rescued so far. Six coastguard vessels, a navy frigate, a military transport and an air force helicopter, as well as several private vessels, were taking part in the search for those missing – a rescue operation set to continue overnight. Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats. In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe. On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe. VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life. The issue of how to house those who arrive in the UK on small boats in order to claim asylum is becoming more acute as the numbers arriving increase. Where more permanent accommodation is unavailable, Home Office policy is to house them in hotels around the country, at a cost of approximately £4.7 million a day. With public services in many of the towns they are placed in already stretched, this is causing friction with local communities who feel ignored by those who are deciding where to house people. In some areas, far rights groups are exploiting those community concerns, and organising protests. Last weekend, hotels in Skegness were boarded up in preparation for one of those protests. Newsnight's Yasminara Khan was there. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog — Website: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 #Newsnight #BBCNews

A New York City hotel that has become a relief center for asylum seekers has reached capacity, forcing some migrants to sleep on the streets. A Fox News Digital reporter in the area captured the scene around the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown, where several migrants were wrapped in blankets on the sidewalk outside the building. Meanwhile, a line of migrants could be seen extending around the corner of the building. One photo shows what appears to be a young migrant girl outside the building with a pink blanket, while another shows a migrant who found a ledge to sleep on, using luggage as a makeshift pillow.
