I ran into a distortion of color but I got it to work well. I don't think it will run games and programs that require lots of graphics. Feel free to ask questions, and try it yourself.

When I bought my used Mac Pro 4.1 last year I put in the smaller RX560 with 2GB of video memory, however, I found that as my video projects grew in size this was too small. I noticed that iMovie would constantly read data from my SSD and move it into the GPU memory, only to dump it out shortly afterward to load in another part of my project. While everything worked fine I wanted to reduce unnecessary read/write operations, making my video editing experience as fast a possible. My testing shows that there is a nice improvement with this video card upgrade, partly because of the larger memory, but also because of the faster processor, and I assume the difference in lane width. While the old RX560 was only a 6x lane card with a 128-bit memory bus, the faster RX580 is a 16x lane card with a 256-bit memory bus. In my opinion, there is no "one best graphics card" for the Mac Pro, but rather it depends on your goal. For example, many users can also be happy with an RX560, because it costs less and draws less power. If on the other hand, you plan more demeaning tasks, such as regular video editing, or gaming, a more powerful RX580 or even a Vega card will be better. You should also pay special attention to your video cards power requirements, and select the right GPU power cable. Some people have elected to stay with High Sierra for now and only updated the Boot ROM by running the Mojave installer. This may be useful if you have Software that won't run on the newer OS. With the move to MacOS Catalina several people have had issues with apps breaking - 32 bit app support was dropped in Catalina. If you have Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion it's easy to setup a Mojave Virtual Machine so that you can use those apps until they're updated for Catalina. This video takes you through the process. You will need a copy of the MacOS Mojave Installer - you can currently get that from Apple here in the app store: 🤍 Apple do seem to remove previous editions however so grab a copy while you can. In this episode I’m going to demo how to install and run macOS Mojave on an external USB 3.0 SSD drive. Straight to the Demo. Soooooo, Let's Get Started. What you will need: An Intel Based Mac System. A Downloaded copy of macOS Mojave Installer. And finally, a fast USB 3.0 External SSD Drive. As usual, since we'll be using Disk Utility, make sure you have or made a backup of your system hard drive before proceeding. Now, with all the basic necessities taken care of, the first thing we'll need to do after inserting the SSD drive in an available USB 3.0 socket, is to open Disk Utility and format the SSD Drive. Therefore, after opening Disk Utility, click on the name of your SSD drive in the sidebar, in my case the name is Blank SSD, then click the Erase button shown here. Now, name your SSD drive to whatever you like and make sure that the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then click the Erase button to format the SSD drive. After formatting the SSD drive, you can close Disk Utility and simply launch the macOS Mojave installer and choose to install Mojave on the SSD drive just formatted. I’ll just time lapse the installation process from here, which took about 18 minutes to complete, to point where you begin to select your location. Once the required login details has been entered, you are brought to the Mojave desktop. At this point, it’s advisable to change the startup disk order from the external SSD drive to your default start up drive of your Mac, which in my case is the Macintosh HD as shown here. Once that’s taken care of, I’ll just shutdown the Mac and proceed with the power and option key combination to boot to the Startup Manager and click on the external SSD drive to launch macOS Mojave as shown. In today's video I'll be installing macOS Mojave on my 4,1 Mac Pro that I flashed to a 5,1 Mac Pro WITHOUT using any patchers. Official installation process only. This video is made in real time- I am figuring out how to do this without looking it up or reading any guides. I simply sat down to update the system as anyone would, so this video isn't necessarily a 'step by step' guide. As an update to the end of the video, the graphical glitches (macOS only by the way) have gotten much less noticeable, and are usually fixed when they do occur by unplugging the monitor and plugging back in again. Additionally, I am using DVI because my monitor only supports 144hz over DVI (old monitor, no DP), so running over DisplayPort or HDMI may run smoother. Also, it's likely that you won't have to perform 2 firmware updates, I just saw the first one under High Sierra because I hadn't gotten into the Mojave installer, so it's likely that you'll only have to do one update.
